Best Portable Camp Shower for Overlanding in 2026

Published November 4, 2026 · Flow rates, water per shower and what a hot shower really takes

The best portable camp shower for overlanding depends on one number most listings bury: how many gallons you carry per shower. A rechargeable pump that sips 0.66 gallons a minute and a propane water heater that moves 1.5 gallons a minute are very different tools. One fits on a passenger seat. The other needs a real water supply and a safe spot outdoors.

Our #1 pick

NEMO Helio Pressure Shower

$$ · Mid-range

NEMO lists the Helio at 2.9 gallons (11 liters), a foot pump, a 7-ft neoprene hose and up to 7 minutes of continuous use. It needs no batteries, no 12V plug and no propane, so nothing in it can die on day three of a trip. Check the maker's page for the current price. The trade-off is cold water unless you warm it first, and you pump with your foot while you rinse.

This is a researched buying guide built from manufacturer pages and retailer spec sheets, not from our own field use. We compare four setups from about $40 to about $290, show a table of gallons per shower, and spell out the carbon monoxide rule for anything that burns propane. If your water supply is still a question mark, read our guide to what to buy first on a beginner overland build.

The short version

Budget pick: the Ivation Portable Outdoor Shower, a 1.9-lb battery pump, a budget pick, that runs 0.66 gallons per minute from any bucket. No-power pick: the NEMO Helio, a foot-pump pressure tank that holds 2.9 gallons for a stated 5 to 7 minutes. Hot water pick: the Eccotemp L5, a 1.5 GPM propane heater for outdoor use only. Whatever you buy, a five-minute shower is a few gallons, so size your water storage first.

Our picks, one by one

Ivation Portable Outdoor ShowerBest on a budget

$ · Budget
Best for: Weekend trips where you want a quick rinse from a bucket or jerry can
Watch-out: It only moves water; you supply the container, and it pumps cold water at a low 0.66 gal/min.

Camping World's spec page lists a consistent 0.66 gal/min, a 1.9-lb unit, a 6.5-ft hose and up to 60 minutes of use from a 2200 mAh lithium battery on a 2 to 5 hour USB charge. It can charge from a laptop or a 12V car adapter, so your vehicle covers the charging. As a budget pick it is the lowest-risk entry. At 0.66 gal/min a 5-gallon bucket lasts about 7.5 minutes of running water, which is enough for a rinse and a lather break. Beyond the price, it beats the NEMO for people who dislike foot-pumping and who already own a bucket.

NEMO Helio Pressure ShowerOur Pick

$$ · Mid-range
Best for: Solo overlanders who want a self-contained shower with nothing to charge
Watch-out: The tank is only 2.9 gallons, so a longer shower means a refill, and NEMO's own page shows it backordered at times.

NEMO lists 2.9 gallons (11 L), a foot pump and a 7-ft neoprene hose with a two-stage nozzle that clicks into continuous spray. The stated 5 to 7 minutes of use implies a flow of roughly 0.4 to 0.6 gal/min. Weight varies by listing: 1 lb 6 oz on the maker-spec retailer page and 1 lb 12 oz packed on Amazon. It folds to about 5.5 x 8.5 inches, so it fits in a drawer. Compared with the Ivation it costs more than three times as much but never needs a charge.

NEMO Helio LX Pressure ShowerBest for two people

$$ · Mid-range
Best for: Couples or anyone who wants a full shower plus hair wash
Watch-out: It costs more than the standard Helio and the 5.8-gallon tank is heavy to lift when full.

NEMO lists 22 L (5.8 gallons), 7 to 10 minutes of continuous steady spray, the same 7-ft hose and a foot pump, plus a padded carry handle and a folding design. Water alone weighs about 48 lbs at 8.34 lbs per gallon, so fill it from a jerry can at the spot where it will sit. That 8.34 figure is the standard weight of water. It is the better value than buying two standard Helios if you shower together.

Eccotemp L5 Portable Tankless Water HeaterBest for hot water

$$ · Mid-range
Best for: Base-camp stays of three or more days where a hot shower matters
Watch-out: Outdoor use only, it needs a pressurized water source (20 to 80 PSI), and a 1.5 GPM flow burns 7.5 gallons in five minutes.

Eccotemp lists 1.5 GPM, up to 37,500 BTU, 10.8 lbs, an 18 x 11.5 x 5.25 inch body, a 20-lb propane tank, electronic ignition on two D batteries and a tilt shut-off past 45 degrees. The brand says it needs at least 0.5 gallons per minute to ignite, and a 12V pump (the EccoFlo) covers low-pressure setups like a jerry can. The pump's published amp draw varies by source, so check the label before you size a battery. Treat the 120 F ceiling as a best case: at full flow the heater raises water temperature less than at low flow, as the math below shows.

How we chose

We built this list from manufacturer pages (NEMO, Eccotemp) and retailer spec sheets (Camping World for Ivation), then checked each product against Amazon listings. We ranked on five criteria: a stated flow rate or runtime we could turn into gallons, weight and packed size, whether it needs power, a real drawback, and warranty. NEMO states a lifetime warranty against defects on its products; Eccotemp lists one year on parts and the heat exchanger.

We left out two products you will see in other lists. RinseKit says it does not sell on Amazon and that listings there come from unauthorized sellers. The Camp Chef Triton, a 1.5 GPM propane heater, showed as unavailable on Amazon when we checked. This is research from specs and owner reports, not from our own field use, and prices move.

Gallons per shower: the numbers listings skip

Water is the real cost of a shower. We converted each flow rate into gallons for a five-minute shower and into minutes per fill. The NEMO flows are implied from NEMO's stated run times, so treat them as estimates.

SetupFlow (gal/min)Gallons for 5 minMinutes from one fill
Ivation (5-gal bucket)0.663.37.6
NEMO Helio (2.9 gal)0.41 to 0.582.1 to 2.95 to 7 (stated)
NEMO Helio LX (5.8 gal)0.58 to 0.832.9 to 4.17 to 10 (stated)
Eccotemp L5 (full flow)1.57.53.3 per 5-gal can

Formula: gallons for 5 minutes = gal/min x 5; minutes per fill = tank gallons / gal/min; implied NEMO flow = tank gallons / stated minutes.

Read the table as a decision rule. A weekend couple on a 5-gallon bucket gets about two Ivation showers. Add the L5 at full flow and the same couple burns 15 gallons in two five-minute showers. That is a whole jerry can, which is why our 12V fridge guide and your water plan belong in the same conversation. The L5's flow knob lets you turn the rate down, which is how you stretch a tank.

Hot water: what the BTU rating actually buys

A heater raises the temperature of water by a fixed amount for each gallon per minute you push through. The rule of thumb is: temperature rise in degrees F = BTU per hour / (500 x gallons per minute). The 500 comes from 8.34 lbs per gallon times 60 minutes. This is an ideal ceiling that ignores heat lost in the exhaust.

Heater settingBTU/hFlow (GPM)Ideal rise (F)
Eccotemp L5, max burn, full flow37,5001.550
Eccotemp L5, max burn, low flow37,5000.75100
Eccotemp L5, low burn, full flow25,0001.533

Formula: rise (F) = BTU/h / (500 x GPM). Eccotemp lists 25,000 to 37,500 BTU for the L5.

So 50 F of rise on 50 F creek-fed or tank water gives you roughly 100 F at the very best. Cut the flow in half and the same burner makes water much hotter, and you use half the water. That is why the best warm shower in a camp setting is a slow one.

Carbon monoxide: propane heaters stay outside

Eccotemp describes the L5 as an outdoor-only liquid propane unit with a built-in rain cap. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says never to use portable fuel-burning camping equipment inside a home, garage, vehicle or tent unless it is specifically designed for an enclosed space. Carbon monoxide has no color or smell, and opening a door or window does not make it safe.

Setting up a shower at a dispersed site

Start with the water. Fill from a jerry can or a collapsible container the night before so the sun can take the chill off, and keep the container where the sun hits it. A dark container in direct sun warms noticeably, but treat that as a bonus, not a plan. Cold mountain nights make a cold rinse miserable, so shower in the afternoon.

Choose a flat, durable surface such as bare gravel or packed dirt, never riparian vegetation. Hang the NEMO from a roof rack bar, an open tailgate or a rooftop tent ladder. The Helio's 7-ft hose lets you hold the nozzle overhead, and Ivation's 6.5-ft hose does the same from a bucket on a cargo box. Many overlanders add a privacy shelter. NEMO sells its own Heliopolis shelter, but a cheap pop-up shower tent works with any option here.

Plan the pump's power too. The Ivation's battery gives about 60 minutes of pump time, which at 0.66 gal/min is roughly 40 gallons per charge, plenty for a week of rinses for two. That is a back-of-envelope figure from the maker's runtime and flow rate, and the real number drops as the battery ages or cold weather sets in.

Leave No Trace: where the water goes

Leave No Trace guidance for washing is to carry water at least 200 feet from streams and lakes, use small amounts of biodegradable soap and scatter strained wastewater. Even biodegradable soap needs soil to break down, so it should not reach a stream. Dispersed camping rules differ by land manager, so check the BLM or Forest Service page for your area before you rinse off.

Who should NOT buy a camp shower

Also skip the heater if you cannot confirm a water source that delivers at least the 0.5 gallons per minute Eccotemp says it needs to ignite. A trickle from a gravity-fed bag will not light it, and a pump is then mandatory. Buyers who want warm water without any burner can heat a pot on a stove outdoors and mix it with cold water in a bucket for the Ivation pump, checking the pump maker's temperature limits first.

If you want a rechargeable pump topped up every night, our power station guide shows how much battery that takes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best portable shower for overlanding?

For most weekend overlanders, the NEMO Helio is the simplest: 2.9 gallons, a foot pump and no batteries. If you want hot water, the Eccotemp L5 is the one we found with a stated 1.5 GPM, but it is outdoor-only and needs a good water supply.

How much water does a camp shower use?

It depends on flow. At the Ivation's 0.66 gal/min a five-minute shower uses about 3.3 gallons. At the Eccotemp L5's full 1.5 GPM it uses 7.5 gallons, so turn the flow down to save water.

Can I use a propane water heater inside my tent or vehicle?

No. Eccotemp calls the L5 outdoor-only, and the CPSC says portable fuel-burning camping equipment must not be used inside a vehicle or tent unless it is specifically designed for an enclosed space. Carbon monoxide is odorless and deadly.

Does a 12V camping shower pump need a lot of power?

The rechargeable Ivation charges from USB or a 12V adapter and runs about 60 minutes per charge according to Camping World. The EccoFlo pump for the Eccotemp L5 is a separate 12V unit; published amp draw varies by source, so check the label.

Where can I legally dump shower water when dispersed camping?

Leave No Trace says to wash 200 feet from streams and lakes, use small amounts of biodegradable soap and scatter strained water. Local rules vary, so confirm with the land manager.
